HUNGARY: ORBÁN IN BIG DIFFICULTIES
One of Orbán's former strong supporters, the
lawyer PETER MAGYAR, has suddenly turned publicly against Orbán and the current
government. He wants to found his own party and promote a more EU-positive
policy for the country. And he seems to have great and even increasing support
among the population. He was previously married to the Minister of Justice, who
suddenly had to resign together with the female president in February after a
scandalous pardon of a child seducer. Before that, he was for several years in
Brussels as an employee at the Hungarian representation at the EU.
The government tries to overlook and trivialize
him. But it doesn't seem to work.
His increasing popularity comes at the same time
that there are bigger and bigger demonstrations in the country against Orbán
and the government. Especially in the country's cities. The big question is how
rural voters react. It is especially those whom Orbán supports and helps with
many initiatives. You can, among other things, see in Budapest, where the
streets are gradually filled with holes and defects, as no funds come from the
government to maintain them.
The situation is also interesting because
Hungary will be president of the EU from 1 July to 31 December. The European
Parliament is trying to prevent Hungary's presidency.
We live in interesting times!
